Usk Brass Band are deeply saddened to announce the death of Mike Chappell. Mike joined the band when Usk started to contest under the baton of Jeff Jones and continued until he passed away.
'A stalwart of the band, with a heart bigger than the man himself'
Musical Director James Jones gave a statement:
MD - James Jones
'Mike was a passionate musician, performer, committee member, leader and conductor amongst many other great things. I'm not sure the organisation will ever have another 'Mike Chappell', I run out of superlatives when describing Mike, he was a wonderful human being, a stalwart of the band, with a heart bigger than the man himself. Mike was a friend of everyone, well respected across banding locally and everyone would revel at the passion he brought when with the band. I had the pleasure of knowing Mike for many years before Usk Band, he played for me during my first conducting post at Rogerstone Band being in attendance in the very first rehearsal I conducted. Mike was a huge influence in my musical life and the mark he made on me will never be forgotten. Mike's funeral took place during Covid lockdown and a few band members where invited to pay their final respects, which we were all honoured to do. If I could ever conduct a band full of Mikes then I'm sure it would be the most passionate and driven band in the world. Until we meet again for a beer in the sky, rest easy big man.'
When covid-free times present the correct opportunity, the band look forward to celebrating Mike's commitment to the organisation with an update to follow in due course.
