The band certainly embraced the challenge of stepping into 3rd Section Nationally with a strong result in Swansea.
Six bands locked horns to battle it out, playing a 'Cambrian Suite' by Michael Ball. The standard was very high and adjudicator David Hirst mentioned that it was an enjoyable day listening to all the bands. The band was awarded 3rd place, narrowly missing out on qualification to the national finals for a second year in a row. Mr Hirst said there was hardly anything between Usk and Briton Ferry Band who finished second.
It was an outstanding achievement for the band considering it was the first year competing at this higher level.
At the announcement of the results there was an extra special cheer from many players in Usk, as our good friends at Rhyl Band, conducted by Keith Jones took the first place. Rhyl Band and Usk Band have a great relationship as the band's conductors are best mates.
Usk's MD Jeff commented:
'I'm delighted with that result, it was a big step up for us and one the band has embraced. It maybe a blessing in disguise that we didn't qualify for the finals for a second year as we have a very busy summer schedule ahead of us. Huge congratulations to 'my mate Keith' and the whole of Rhyl Band for winning the contest.'
